The transform is a left-to-right reflection

Imagine a vertical line through the centre of the video. Every pixel is displayed the same distance on the other side of that line. A hand near the left edge appears near the right edge; a turn that travels across the frame appears to travel in the opposite screen direction.

This is different from rewinding. Frames stay in their original order, so a step that begins at ten seconds still begins at ten seconds. It is also different from rotating the device: the top of the dancer remains at the top of the picture.

  • Left and right screen positions exchange places.
  • Up, down, timing, rhythm, and playback order stay the same.
  • Any writing in the video will also appear reversed.

Why it can feel easier to follow

When a teacher faces the camera, their right side appears on the viewer's left. Copying the visible shape can therefore conflict with a spoken cue such as “step right.” A mirrored view moves the teacher's right side to the viewer's right side, which can reduce that visual translation.

Mirroring does not decide which side you should use. Some combinations intentionally ask the learner to use the opposite side, and some recordings are already mirrored before you receive them. The instructor's wording and the choreography's intent still matter.

Check the orientation before learning

Look for a deliberate left-or-right cue in the lesson rather than relying on text in the room. Pause on the cue, compare the spoken direction with the dancer's movement, and choose the view that makes those two signals agree for your practice goal.

Once you choose an orientation, keep it consistent through a phrase. Switching repeatedly can make spatial memory less reliable, especially when the phrase includes turns or changes of facing.

Use short loops to confirm the result

Work with a short phrase and mark a clear beginning and end. Watch once, copy once, then check whether your named side, travel direction, and final shape match the instruction. Slower playback can help separate an orientation problem from a timing problem.

If the movement still feels wrong, return to the original view and compare. The useful view is the one that supports the lesson's intended sides—not automatically the mirrored one.
