# Chhau dance sword hand and feet

Chhau dance sword hand and feet do not want the same flip. A front-facing teacher swaps the stepping foot, and the same swap puts a sword or a stick into the other hand. Mayurbhanj, Seraikella, and Purulia are not one grammar. Yakshagana and kathakali endings are not chhau. Ask which foot the phrase uses.

**Short answer.** Chhau dance sword hand and feet need two looks at the same clip. Flip if the stepping foot does not match the teacher. Look again at the hand that would hold a sword, shield, or stick, because the flip moves that too. Styles differ, so do not borrow a foot from another village's page. Kathakali and yakshagana have their own endings. Dancer Mirror does not download videos. Practise empty-handed.

- A flip that fixes the feet can move a prop to the other hand.
- Chhau styles differ. The teacher's clip wins.
- Do not practise with a sharp sword or a real stick at speed.

**Takeaway.** Check the foot. Then check the hand that would hold a prop. Practise the shape empty. Do not drill a sharp weapon from a phone.

## Which hand is the weapon hand?

In a lot of chhau that still shows a martial line, a sword or stick lives in one hand and a shield idea lives in the other. Right-handed dancers are usually taught the weapon in the right. Your guru may have taught a masked style with no weapon at all. Mayurbhanj often has no mask and a different gait from Purulia. Copying a Purulia prop video onto a Mayurbhanj class is how the hands go wrong with a clear conscience.

Do the foot the teacher named. Stop. Look at the empty hand that would hold the prop. If the flip that fixed the foot put that hand on the wrong side, you are in the awkward case. Some students learn the gait mirrored and the hands from the original picture, toggling between them. Write which view the hands use. The UNESCO note tells you chhau is three styles recognised together. It does not pick your hand.

The listing is [here](https://ich.unesco.org/en/RL/chhau-dance-00337). Your guru is the hand.

| You are matching | If it already agrees | If it does not |
| --- | --- | --- |
| The stepping foot | Leave the picture. Do not flip for fun. | Flip once. Step once more. Then look at the hands. |
| The weapon hand | The prop side matches the teacher. | The feet may be right and the weapon wrong. Toggle back for the hands. |
| A masked style with no prop | You only had a foot problem. | Do not add a sword the clip never had. |

## What if there is no weapon in this clip?

Then do not invent one. High leg lifts and walks have their own balance. A stick in the hand changes the shoulder. Practise the gait the clip shows. If a later class adds a prop, that is a new session, with the teacher, at a speed where the prop is a shape and not a projectile.

Sharp steel does not belong in a bedroom rehearsal. A rolled paper, if you must see the line of the arm, stays slow and away from other people. The moment you speed up, put it down. Dancer Mirror can slow the picture. It cannot make a weapon polite.

## Kathakali and yakshagana are not a footnote you can skip honestly

Kathakali endings and yakshagana entries have feet that punctuate a drum. I am not going to assign you a start foot from a paragraph. The recorded class you have names it, or your guru does. A front-facing clip can still show you the other edge of the foot. Quarter speed is for seeing the sole, not for collecting a new style.

If you came here from a bharatanatyam question about mudras, that problem is a different practice. A weapon and a mudra both have a side. The dances do not share a plan. Do not reuse one and change the noun.

## Toggle, then stop

Flip, look at the foot, flip back, look at the hand. Decide. Stop toggling inside the phrase. The second flip feels like progress and it is the first side again, now with a prop in the wrong story.

The picture flip is the [mirror guide](https://dancermirror.com/guides/how-to-mirror-a-dance-video). Chhau only adds the cost of getting the hand wrong.

## The file is the class file

A festival video from the crowd will not show the sole. It will show a mask and a drum. Beautiful, and useless at midnight. Use the clip your teacher allowed you to keep. Dancer Mirror does not download videos.

Name it with the style. 'Chhau' is three dances. You will open the wrong one.
