# How to learn a first dance at home

How to learn a first dance at home starts in the room you will actually use: the clip someone gave you, the shoes you will wear, and a turn that does not fit between the sofa and the table. A studio mirror is not hiding in the flat.

**Short answer.** How to learn a first dance at home means opening the clip you were given and drilling it in the room you have. In a common waltz basic the leader steps forward on the left foot and the follower steps back on the right. Shrink travelling turns until the hall. Check one spoken left against the picture before you repeat a phrase. Dancer Mirror does not download videos and it does not invent the routine.

- A common waltz basic starts the leader forward on the left foot and the follower back on the right.
- A parent dance is a shorter clip of the same problem, not a second method.
- Dancer Mirror does not download videos. Open a file already on the phone.

**Takeaway.** Mark the first step the leader takes, shrink the travel, and save the real size of the turn for a bigger floor. Do not invent a lift because the video had one.

## The living room is the floor you have

Push the table. Look at the longest clear line you can walk without turning your shoulders. That length is the dance until the venue rehearsal. A first-dance video filmed in a hall is a map of a room you do not have. Copying its travel in a flat is how a turn ends in a lamp.

Put on the shoes. Socks and the wedding shoes are different dances, especially on a rug. If the rug slides, take the rug up for the ten minutes you are working the turn, then put it back. Write on the clip where you shrank a step, so the hall rehearsal restores the size on purpose instead of by panic.

## Which foot does the leader step first?

In the waltz basic that most social classes still teach, the leader's first step is the left foot forward, and the follower's first step is the right foot back. Then they travel sideways and close. Your clip may not be a waltz. If it is a sway to a pop song, the first step is whatever the person who made the video did, not a rule from a ballroom book. The waltz is only the case where a textbook and a teacher often agree.

Stand in the role you will dance. If you are the follower, do not copy the leader's foot because that body is larger in the frame. Say the role out loud once. Then do one step and stop. If your left and their left already disagree, fix the picture before the second step, or you will rehearse a partnership that cannot hold hands.

The picture problem, when a teacher faces the camera, is the [mirror guide](https://dancermirror.com/guides/how-to-mirror-a-dance-video). Use it for the side. Stay here for the room.

**A common waltz basic, written as eight boxes**

| Bar | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Leader | L forward | R side | L close | R back | L side | R close | hold | hold |
| Follower | R back | L side | R close | L forward | R side | L close | hold | hold |

## The turn that needs a bigger floor

Loop only the turn. Dance it at a walk, with the free hand on the follower's back where it will actually be, not hovering in the air because the video looks nicer that way. If your elbow hits a wall, the turn is too big for tonight. Mark a smaller version and write 'full size at the venue' on that timestamp.

Do not add a lift because the clip has one and the chorus feels empty without it. A lift needs a person who taught it, a floor that does not slide, and a landing you have both survived slowly. A living room is a poor place to find out. If the routine you were given includes one, practise the entry and the exit on the ground first, and leave the lift for the teacher who put it there.

## A parent dance is the same clip, shorter

Father-daughter and mother-son dances fail in a particular way. The parent is brave and stiff, the child is trying not to lead too hard, and the song is longer than anyone's nerve. Cut the practice to the walk-on, the first sixteen counts, and the last pose. The middle can be a sway you could do in a queue.

Film one take from the waist up after the feet are dull. The room will watch faces. If the feet are still a negotiation, the faces will show it, and no amount of expression pasted on top will hide a stumble. Same rule as any other partnership: one role, one first step, one agreed side.

## What if the tutorial is facing you?

Then their right is on your left until you flip the picture or you decide you want the audience view. A couple clip often shows both people, so flipping helps the person who was facing the camera and can annoy the person who had their back to it. Check one handhold. If the leader's right hand is supposed to hold the follower's right hand, the picture has to show that, not a mirrored handshake that no one can join.

Dancer Mirror does not download videos. Keep the file your teacher or your friend already sent, and work that file. A new tutorial of a different song is how the week disappears. The general way of learning one phrase at home, when this reception dance is not the problem, is the home guide.
