# Why do I turn the wrong way in line dance?

Why do I turn the wrong way in line dance is what people ask after they grapevine into the person beside them. The step sheet named a wall and a start foot. The video faced the camera. Those two facts do not survive a flip you did not notice.

**Short answer.** Why do I turn the wrong way in line dance is usually a step sheet and a video that do not face the same way. Sheets name the starting foot and the wall. A teacher facing the camera puts their right on your left, so a grapevine and a quarter turn both reverse. Read count 1 on your sheet, test that foot, and only then flip or unflip the picture. Dancer Mirror does not download videos. One dance per session.

- Step sheets name the foot that has the weight, and the wall you face.
- A front-facing video can reverse both.
- Dancer Mirror does not download videos.

**Takeaway.** Read count 1 on the sheet you were given. Then make the video agree with that foot. A mirrored tutorial can be useful, and it can also be the reason the whole row turns into you.

## The sheet and the video are not the same object

A line dance is a contract. Count 1 has a foot, a weight, and a wall. The sheet is that contract. The video is somebody performing it, often looking at you so you can see their face. Those are different jobs. If you learn only from the face, you will dance the mirror image, and on a floor of forty people the mirror image is a crash.

CopperKnob and the clubs that use it exist so the sheet can be checked. Open the sheet for the dance you were actually taught, not a dance with a similar name. Then play your clip. If the sheet says the right heel and your left heel moved, the picture needs a flip, or you are watching a clip that was already flipped and you flipped it again.

Already-flipped versus original is the [mirror guide](https://dancermirror.com/guides/how-to-mirror-a-dance-video). Line dance is the case where the wall makes the mistake public.

## What does count 1 say?

Read it aloud. Weight on the left, or a heel dig with the right, or a touch. Do that one action and stop. Do not 'get the feel of the dance' first. The feel of a reversed dance is very convincing right up until the first turn.

Some social dances are so common that people think they remember the sheet. Memory is how a grapevine-right becomes a grapevine-left for one person in the row. If you cannot point at the words, you do not have the sheet. Ask for it. Guessing from a video you found later is a different dance with the same title.

**A blank row for the sheet in your hand**

| Bar | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Write yours | count 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 |

## Why did the quarter turn face the wrong wall?

A four-wall dance turns you a quarter so the next phrase faces a new wall. If left and right are swapped, you turn toward the bar when the room turns toward the door. You are now the only person walking into the line. It feels like you 'have two left feet'. You have one reversed video.

Practise facing a wall you can name. The window, the television, the door. When the sheet says turn a quarter left, the window should leave your nose and a new wall should arrive. If the opposite wall arrives, stop. Do not finish the dance 'to see'. You will only memorise the wrong square.

## One dance, not the whole night

Boot scootin', a tush push, an electric slide: each has its own count 1. Learning three in one evening because a party playlist might include them is how all three end up with the same wrong turn. Pick the one someone will actually start. Own its restart, because line dances restart and the restart uses the same foot as count 1.

At home you will not have forty bodies to bump. Mark the spot beside you with a shoe and imagine that shoe is a person who knows the dance. If your grapevine crosses the shoe, you would have crossed them. That is the whole test.

## Bring the file you were sent

Dancer Mirror does not download videos. The teacher who filmed the class, or the friend who sent the step sheet's companion clip, already gave you a file. A random upload with the same title may be a different choreographer's version, already mirrored, with a tag. Double-mirroring is a full circle back to wrong.

How a saved file is different from a link is [learn from a saved video](https://dancermirror.com/guides/learn-a-dance-from-a-saved-video). The sheet still outranks the file when they disagree.
