# Bhangra steps look backwards

Bhangra steps look backwards when the person who filmed the bounce was facing the phone. Your knee comes up on the side their knee seems to, and in a line that is a collision. Teams and tutors do not share one compulsory start foot. The clip's own left is the authority.

**Short answer.** Bhangra steps look backwards because a dancer facing the camera puts their right on the viewer's left. Competitive teams and wedding tutors do not agree on one compulsory start foot, so you follow the left and right spoken in the clip you have. Test one bounce before you drill. A stick or a sapp makes a wrong knee obvious, because the line no longer matches. Dancer Mirror does not download videos. It plays a file already on the phone.

- There is no single start foot that every bhangra team obeys.
- A front-facing clip swaps the knee you think you saw.
- Dancer Mirror does not download videos.

**Takeaway.** Copy one bounce and name the knee. If a stick line is supposed to match, mismatched knees show up before the arms do. Do not inherit another team's starting foot from a forum.

## Whose left is the bounce?

Stand up for one count only. The person in the video hops, or lifts a knee, or shrugs a shoulder. Name which of your knees moved. Then replay the word they said, if they said one. If they said left and your right moved, the picture is the wrong way round for copying, or you misheard. Either way you are not ready for the second eight.

Folk notes and team warm-ups disagree about which foot plants first. One recreational note begins a walk on the right. A wedding choreographer may teach the opposite because that is how their set faces the guests. Publishing one start foot for every team would be a lie that travels faster than the correction. Your file wins.

The flip itself is the [mirror guide](https://dancermirror.com/guides/how-to-mirror-a-dance-video), and the reason a facing teacher swaps sides is why tutorials feel backwards.

**Until the knee is visible**

- 0.25×: One bounce. Name the knee before you add arms.
- 0.5×: Same bounce, twice, still without the shoulder story.
- 1×: Arms return only if the knee is still the one you named.
- 1.5×: Stop if the knee flips. You are chasing the drum, not the step.

## What if the line has a prop?

A khunda or a sapp is a straight line of wood. If your neighbour lifts the right knee and you lift the left, the sticks stop being a picture and start being a hazard. You will not discover this in a bedroom with one person. You discover it at the first full run, which is a bad time.

Practise the prop last, and slowly, with the foot already decided. If you do not have the stick yet, use a rolled magazine and keep it on the side the clip's note names. Switching the stick to 'make the arms look right' is how the feet get renegotiated in the corridor.

## A wedding set is still this problem

Punjabi wedding dances often borrow bhangra energy without borrowing a team's syllabus. The uncle filming on a phone is facing the group. Everyone at home, later, faces him. That is the whole trap. It is not a different art form from the competitive circuit. It is the same picture problem with sharper clothes and less rehearsal.

If the function is a sangeet medley and the bhangra is one song among several, the family still needs one written side for that song. Do not assume the Bollywood number before it used the same flip. Songs get filmed by different cousins.

The family plan for a whole function is the [sangeet guide](https://dancermirror.com/guides/practise-a-bollywood-or-sangeet-dance-at-home). Stay on this page for the bounce itself.

## Do not inherit another team's start

Comments under a video are a bad guru. A dancer in Birmingham and a dancer in Ludhiana can both be right about their own set and useless about yours. If the clip does not say a foot, ask the person who sent it. If they are asleep, drill the arms in place and leave the travelling step for the morning. Guessing trains the guess.

Dancer Mirror does not download videos. Save the file you were sent and work that. A second tutorial of 'basic bhangra' from a stranger is a second team. You will blend them without noticing, and the line will show it.

## When the bounce is boring, add the rest

Shoulders, the yell, the face: they sit on a bounce that no longer needs your eyes. If you add them while the knee is still a coin flip, you get a busy wrong step. Wedding guests forgive a simple bounce. They do not forgive half the line going the other way.

Slowing a clip down, as a general tool, is [how to learn dance at home](https://dancermirror.com/guides/how-to-learn-dance-at-home). The ladder above is only for this bounce.
