# Learn garba at home from a video

Learn garba at home from a video by standing as if the centre of the circle is in front of you, then checking which way that circle travels. Claps can wait. A backwards clip will walk you into the people coming the other way.

**Short answer.** Learn garba at home from a video by matching the circle's direction before you memorise a clap. Garba circles are widely danced anti-clockwise around the centre. A front-facing clip can send you clockwise into the line. Dandiya sticks have a similar trap: a common teaching strikes right stick to right stick first, and a flipped picture swaps the hands. Dancer Mirror does not download videos. Open the file you already have and test one step.

- A Gujarat inventory of garba describes the circle moving anti-clockwise around the lamp or the image.
- Be taali is one teaching of two claps, not the whole night.
- Dancer Mirror does not download videos.

**Takeaway.** Travel anti-clockwise unless the clip you were given clearly does otherwise. For sticks, test one strike before you trust a front-facing video with your knuckles.

## Which way is the circle going?

Put a cushion on the floor and call it the centre. Walk around it the way the dancers in the clip walk, not the way that feels natural. If they travel so the centre stays on their right, you do the same. The inventory note on garba of Gujarat describes dancers moving anti-clockwise around the lamp or the image of the mother goddess. Community grounds still teach that as the ordinary direction. A video shot from inside the circle, or flipped for a phone, can make the whole ring look clockwise.

If you learn the clockwise version by accident, you will not notice in a bedroom. You will notice when you step into a ground of a few hundred people and your shoulder meets someone who has been doing this since they were small. Stop, step out, and rejoin behind a dancer you can follow. Do not try to correct the circle.

The direction is described in the [Garba of Gujarat note](https://indiaich-sna.in/sites/default/files/2024-02/16479735985428_1.pdf). The player only helps you see the clip you already saved.

1. Mark a centre on the floor. A cushion is enough.
2. Play two claps of the clip and point the way the bodies travel.
3. Walk that way yourself, centre on the same side as in the clip.
4. If a spoken instruction and the picture disagree, trust the instruction once, then look again.
5. Write the direction in the group chat before anyone else drills.

## Be taali is one pattern, not the night

Two claps, three claps, dodhiyu, a popatiyu that traces a triangle: these are patterns people meet, and classes do not teach them as one frozen step. A beginner page will often start be taali with the right foot to the right, then the left foot to the left, travelling so the circle still goes anti-clockwise. Another teacher begins with two walks and a clap. Both can be honest. Your clip is the authority for tonight.

Loop one cycle until the clap lands without a hunt. Then travel. Clapping in place and calling it garba is how people arrive at Navratri unable to enter the ring. The speed of the song will climb on the night. If you can only survive the pattern slowly, you can still enter during the slow part and step out when it sprints. That is a better plan than a blur.

## Which hand meets the stick?

Dandiya is where a backwards video stops being funny. You have a stick in each hand. A common teaching strikes your right stick against your partner's right stick on the first hit, then the left, then a cross. I have seen circles teach the order differently. Test one strike with a wooden spoon and a friend, or against a cushion, before you decide the video is right.

If the demonstrator is facing the camera, their right stick appears on your left. Copy that without flipping and you will offer the wrong hand. The bruise is on the knuckles, not in the group chat. Flip the picture, strike once, and see whether the hands now match the person who sent the clip. If they also said 'right' out loud, the word wins over a guess.

## Filmed from inside the circle

A phone held in the centre sees everyone moving one way. A phone held outside the ring sees the backs of the nearest dancers and the faces of the far ones. Those are not two dances. Before you copy footwork, decide where the camera was. If you can see faces and the centre in the same shot, you are looking across the circle, and left-right is already a puzzle.

Zoom until one pair of feet is large enough to name. The rest of the ground is decoration. When the feet are clear, add the clap. When the clap is late, you are watching hands too soon. This is the opposite of a couple dance, where the hold is the point. Here the ring is the point.

## What do you send back to the group?

One sentence. Direction, and whether you flipped the picture. Not a new edit of the song, and not five other garba clips. People will rehearse whatever file is newest. If you send a second video 'to help', you have started a second dance.

Dancer Mirror does not download videos. The clip has to be one you already have, from the friend who filmed the circle or the teacher who sent homework. A sangeet medley with a garba section can live on the sangeet page. This page is only the circle and the sticks.
