# Learn sevillanas at home

Learn sevillanas at home from the copla that is actually breaking, not from a blur of all four. Partners pass on a diagonal. If you drill the arms while the pass is still a guess, you will pass on the wrong shoulder and call it flamenco.

**Short answer.** Learn sevillanas at home one copla at a time. There are four, and partners pass each other on set diagonals, so the shoulder you pass on matters more than a pretty arm. A teacher facing the camera can swap that diagonal. Walk the pass slowly before you add the wrists. Heel-and-toe sounds need a slower speed only after the path is stable. Dancer Mirror does not download videos. Use the clip you were given.

- Sevillanas is danced in four coplas. Learn the one that fails.
- The pass has a diagonal. A facing video can swap it.

**Takeaway.** One copla until the pass is dull. Zapateado is a sound you slow down after the path is clear. A wedding and a feria use the same clip problem.

## Which copla is breaking?

Sevillanas comes in four parts. People try to swallow all four because the song feels short and the fair is on Saturday. They then pass badly in every part. Pick the copla where you lost your partner last time. If you have never danced it, the first one is enough for the night. The other three will still be there tomorrow, unfortunately for your ego and fortunately for the dance.

Mark the start of that copla and the start of the next, so the loop does not leak. A loop that includes the seam will teach you to rush the ending. The ending is where partners are supposed to find each other again.

1. Name the copla out loud. First, second, third, or fourth.
2. Walk the pass with no arms, at a stroll.
3. Add the arms only when the shoulder you pass is boring.
4. Stop before you open the next copla.

## Which shoulder do you pass on?

Face your partner, or face where they would stand if the kitchen is empty. Walk the pass the video shows and notice which shoulder passes which. Then flip the picture and walk it again. One of those two walks matches the person who taught you. The other is a polite collision.

A front-facing couple video is especially mean, because each partner is mirrored differently depending on who faced the camera. Check the pass, not the smile. The smile works on both diagonals. The shoulder does not.

Four coplas, as a description of the dance rather than a lesson, are in the [sevillanas overview](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sevillanas).

## Zapateado is a sound, then a picture

Heel, toe, the flat of the foot: at full speed it is a noise. Slow the noise until you can see which foot made it. If you slow the whole copla, you will fall asleep and learn nothing. Slow two beats of the sound, then return to the pass at a human walk. The sound is decoration on a path. A path with no sound still looks like sevillanas. A sound with the wrong path looks like a person stapled to the floor.

Hard floors only. A rug eats the sound and teaches you a lazy ankle. If the only hard floor is a hallway, the hallway is the studio for those two beats. Warn the house. Then stop.

## A feria or a wedding, same clip

People learn sevillanas for a fair, for a Spanish wedding, or because a cousin announced that everyone would dance it. The event changes the shame level. It does not change the practice. You still have a clip, a partner who may be in another city, and a pass. Send the side note. Do not send a new edit of the music.

If your partner is not in the room, use a chair as their shoulder height so the pass has somewhere to go. Passing an invisible person in the middle of the kitchen trains a diagonal that drifts toward the fridge. The chair is honest about where they will stand.

## Do not drill all four tonight

Close the file when the one copla has had a clean pass twice. Watching the other three 'just to see' is how the arms from copla three infect copla one. You can see them tomorrow.

Dancer Mirror does not download videos. The clip is the one your teacher or your partner sent. A stage flamenco with a different rhythm is a different night and a different dance, even if the dress looks related.

Looping one section, as a tool, is [how to loop one section](https://dancermirror.com/guides/how-to-loop-one-section-of-a-dance). If the pass is on the wrong shoulder because the teacher faced you, flip the picture with the mirror guide.
